The ATM Strategy: Avoid the “Airport Trap”
The currency exchange booths at Casablanca (CMN) and Marrakech (RAK) airports offer some of the worst rates in the country.
The Fix:
- Arrive prepared: Have enough cash for your private transfer or use a pre-paid service.
- Go to a Bank: Use an ATM attached to a bank (Attijariwafa, Banque Populaire, BMCE) in the city.
- The Limit: Most Moroccan ATMs have a withdrawal limit of 2,000 MAD (approx $200) per transaction. If you need more, you may need to perform multiple transactions or try a different bank.
Critical Warning: When the ATM asks if you want to be charged in your home currency (USD/GBP/EUR) or in MAD, ALWAYS choose MAD (Local Currency). This saves you from “Dynamic Currency Conversion,” where the bank sets a terrible exchange rate.
Card Acceptance: Visa vs. The Rest
- Visa & Mastercard: Widely accepted.
- American Express / Discover: Virtually useless. Only the most expensive 5-star hotels will take them. Leave them at home or keep them as a backup only.

Every time you swipe your card or withdraw cash, you risk paying foreign transaction fees.
The Hack: Book your big-ticket logistics online before you arrive. This locks in the price in your home currency and avoids the ATM limits.

Pro Tip: The “Small Change” Rule
Taxi drivers and shopkeepers often claim they have “no change” for a 100 MAD or 200 MAD note. Hoard your coins. Whenever you buy water or coffee at a supermarket (Carrefour), break your large bills. Keep a pocket full of 10 MAD and 20 MAD coins/notes for taxis.
